Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the one whom Allah sent as a mercy to the worlds, and upon his family and companions and those who follow him with good until the Day of Judgment. After that,

Islam emphasizes the importance of moral values and legal teachings that call for tolerance, justice, fairness, and the rejection of hatred in societies because Allah, the Exalted, created humans different in various forms, but they are united in humanity; thus, they must cooperate and coexist with one another regardless of their differences, and it urges not to discriminate between people based on race, color, or religion, and any discrimination on this basis is considered contrary to the law.

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ﴾ [Al-Hujurat: 13]

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿ادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ﴾ [An-Nahl: 125]

And the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "He is not one of us who calls to tribalism, and he is not one of us who fights for tribalism, and he is not one of us who dies for tribalism.".

It can be said briefly that rejecting hate speech in Islam is an expression of the high moral values of good coexistence, which is an essential part of Islamic teachings.

Research Problem:

Highlighting hate speech helps in understanding the effective Islamic discourse for rejecting hate speech by answering the following questions:

  1. What is meant by hate speech?

  2. What is the basis of the discourse of rejecting hate from the Holy Qur’an?

  3. What is the basis of the discourse of rejecting hate from the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah?

  4. What is the practical model from the biography of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in rejecting hatred?

Research Objectives:

The rejection of hate speech derived from the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah contributes to creating a positive environment that promotes constructive communication and achieving constructive social progress as follows:

1-Contributing to building a tolerant and diverse society that encourages respect and appreciation of differences among individuals and societies.

2- Encouraging the call to accept others and overlook mistakes.

3- Encouraging the testimony of truth and standing by justice, and not participating in hatred or discrimination.

4- Maintaining stability in society.

Research Method: I relied on a methodology based on induction and deduction from the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah to establish the foundation for rejecting hate speech.

Research Plan: The research consists of an introduction, a conclusion, and three sections in between:

Section One: Definition of Hate Speech:

Section Two: The basis of Islamic discourse in rejecting hate from the Holy Qur’an.

Section Three: The basis of Islamic discourse in rejecting hate from the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah, which contains two requirements:

Requirement One: The Noble Hadiths indicating the rejection of hate speech.

Requirement Two: Examples from the Noble Prophet’s biography indicating the rejection of hatred.

Conclusion: It contains the results and recommendations.

Keywords: Speech, rejection, hatred, incitement, Holy Qur'an, Noble Prophet's Sunnah.

Hate speech from the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah

The basis of Islamic discourse derived from the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Prophet’s Sunnah is based on the principle of peaceful coexistence among Muslims themselves and between Muslims and others on several foundations represented in justice, respect for human dignity, kindness, good treatment, and citizenship, which means accepting others and coexisting with them in peace and security, in addition to the fact that Islam has left humans the freedom of choice without compulsion or coercion in the true religion.

Definition of Hate Speech

Definition of Hate Speech in language:

Ibn Ashour said: Hatred is the aversion of nature to something, with the letter 'dhamma' indicating hardship and aversion, and with the letter 'fatha' indicating coercion and what comes to a person from another party by compulsion to do something with harm or hardship..

And hate speech: is a type of discourse that aims to talk about the importance of avoiding hatred and discrimination between individuals or groups based on different origins.

Hate speech is defined from the perspective of Islam. It is the legitimate teachings and Islamic values that call for the promotion of peaceful coexistence and understanding among people and mutual respect, in light of religious pluralism, with the expansion of the Islamic community since the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and thereafter throughout Islamic history.

It is important to know the values of the legitimate teachings that are obligatory in the treatment of one human being to another, which include the right of Allah and His law, the right of one's fellow human being, and the interest of the individual in this world and the hereafter, and what it entails of kindness to people and avoiding harm to them.

Then the relationship between people becomes a source of goodness and blessing for them in this world and the hereafter. At that point, the noble morals among people appear, characterized by love, respect, and justice, while hatred, malice, and mutual disdain disappear.

The foundation of the Islamic discourse in rejecting hatred from the Holy Quran

Referring back to the Holy Quran, we find that it contains the foundation of the discourse in dealing with justice and kindness and rejecting the discourse of hatred through the following noble verses:

  1. The Islamic discourse is based on the idea of the unity of humanity in life, emphasizing justice and equality without discrimination based on race, religion, or gender, and calling for acquaintance and cooperation.

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ﴾ [Al-Hujurat: 13]

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ النَّاسَ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ﴾  [Hud: 118]

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا كَافَّةً لِلنَّاسِ بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ [Saba: 28]

  1. The Islamic discourse is based on Freedom of belief and religion without compulsion or coercion, which enhances peaceful coexistence and the rejection of hatred among Muslims themselves and between Muslims and others, which means accepting others and living with them in peace and security.

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ قَدْ تَبَيَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الْغَيِّ﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 256]

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْ﴾ [Al-Kahf: 29]

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَآمَنَ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كُلُّهُمْ جَمِيعًا أَفَأَنْتَ تُكْرِهُ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ [Yunus: 99]

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿لِكُلٍّ جَعَلْنَا مِنْكُمْ شِرْعَةً وَمِنْهَاجًا وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَجَعَلَكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 48]

His saying indicates respect for religious freedom that honors the humanity of man and the intellect that Allah has distinguished him with, and that His will has decreed that pluralism is one of the established norms. Hence, peaceful coexistence has become a vital necessity that people cannot do without at any time and place, and to achieve it, it is essential to reject the discourse of hatred among people.

  1. The Islamic discourse is based on calling with wisdom and good admonition, which is more conducive to accepting the discourse among people.

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿ادْعُ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُمْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ﴾ [An-Nahl: 125]

  1. The Islamic discourse is based On calling for agreement and cooperation and rejecting disputes to achieve goodness and peace.

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُولُوا اشْهَدُوا بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ [Al-Imran: 64]

  1. The Islamic discourse is based Not stirring up animosities or hatred among people.

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 91]

Al-Tabari said, explaining the noble verse: "Satan wants to cause animosity and hatred among you through your drinking of alcohol and your gambling with arrows, to make some of you hostile to others, and to make some of you dislike others, to scatter your affairs after Allah has united you in faith and brought you together in the brotherhood of Islam, and to divert you from the remembrance of Allah.".

Therefore, it is imperative to close all doors to Satan to prevent him from entering the soul; and whispering aggression and beautifying hatred.

  1. The Islamic discourse encourages dialogue between different religions and cultures, as well as mutual understanding among people to resolve disputes in the best manner.

Allah, the Almighty, said:﴿قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ أَلَّا نَعْبُدَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضًا أَرْبَابًا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُولُوا اشْهَدُوا بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ [Al-Imran: 64]

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِنْكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ مُعْرِضُونَ﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 83]

  1. The Islamic discourse is based On bearing witness to the truth and standing by justice, and not participating in hatred or discrimination.

Allah, the Exalted, said:﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ بِالْقِسْطِ شُهَدَاءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَوِ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ إِنْ يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا أَوْ فَقِيرًا فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَى بِهِمَا فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا الْهَوَى أَنْ تَعْدِلُوا وَإِنْ تَلْوُوا أَوْ تُعْرِضُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا﴾ [An-Nisa: 135]

Allah, the Almighty, said:﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ لِلَّهِ شُهَدَاءَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا اعْدِلُوا هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 8]

  1. Islamic discourse Is based on strengthening peaceful relations among people, establishing justice and equity, and achieving security since the beginning of the call, where peace was its methodology and tolerance its behavior.

Allah, the Almighty, said: ﴿لَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ أَنْ تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ﴾ [Al-Mumtahana: 8]

  1. Islamic discourse Is based on respecting others and rejecting hate speech against them and infringing on their beliefs to achieve peaceful coexistence, for every nation has its own deeds and its reckoning is with Allah Almighty.

Chapter Three

The foundation of Islamic discourse in rejecting hatred is from the noble prophetic tradition.

The prophetic tradition is considered an important reference for understanding and interpreting the Holy Quran and a source of Islamic legislation, which includes:

  • The prophetic hadiths: These are the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that were transmitted from him and are an important source in the law.

  • The prophetic biography: These are the events that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went through during his life, which reflect the values, morals, and behavior during his interactions with others.

These evidences from the noble prophetic tradition are an important part of understanding and applying Islamic law and guiding Muslims in their worldly lives.

The first requirement: The noble prophetic hadiths indicating the rejection of hate speech:

A number of noble prophetic hadiths have been reported that encourage the rejection of hatred among people, to achieve peaceful coexistence through mutual respect and kindness towards each other and others, among these hadiths:

  1. The call to promote goodness in speech and actions and to close the avenues of evil.

From Anas bin Malik, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «Indeed, among the people are keys to goodness and locks to evil, and among the people are keys to evil and locks to goodness. Blessed is he whom Allah has made keys to goodness in his hands, and woe to him whom Allah has made keys to evil in his hands.».

  1. The call to brotherhood, love, and peace, and to abandon everything that leads to hatred and animosity, such as suspicion, envy, injustice, betrayal, and contempt.

Ibn al-Qayyim said: The essence of loyalty is love, and there is no loyalty except with love, just as the essence of enmity is hatred. .

He added: Love and will are the origin of every action and its principle, while hatred and aversion are the origin of every abandonment and its principle. These two forces in the heart are the source of the servant's happiness and misery..

And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: «None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.» ()

And from Abu Huraira, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not guide you to something that if you do it, you will love one another? Spread peace among you.».

And from Abdullah bin Amr, he said: It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): Who is the best of people? He said: «Every pure-hearted person, truthful in speech.» They said: We know the truthful in speech, but what is the pure-hearted? He said: «He is the pious, free of sin, free of oppression, free of malice, and free of envy.»  .

And from Abu Huraira, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech. And do not spy, do not pry, do not compete with one another, do not envy one another, do not hate one another, and do not turn away from one another. And be servants of Allah, brothers.».

In another narration, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «Do not envy one another, do not engage in deceitful trade, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and do not undercut one another in sales. And be servants of Allah, brothers. The Muslim is the brother of another Muslim; he does not wrong him, nor does he forsake him, nor does he belittle him. Piety is here,» and he pointed to his chest three times. «It is enough for a person to be evil that he belittles his Muslim brother. All of a Muslim is sacred to another Muslim: his blood, his wealth, and his honor.» (And do not belittle him) means: "Do not despise him, so do not deny him or belittle him." ().

Al-Sa'di said: "Believers should be loving and harmonious, not hateful or hostile, all striving for their collective interests that uphold their religion and worldly affairs, with no noble person looking down on a lowly one, nor should any of them despise another." .
And from Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «When Persia and Rome are opened to you, what kind of people will you be?» Abdul Rahman bin Awf said: We will say as Allah commanded us. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «Or otherwise, you will compete, then you will envy one another, then you will turn away from one another, then you will hate one another, or something like that, then you will go to the poor among the immigrants, and you will put some of them on the necks of others.»  .

Al-Nawawi said: "Competition for something is racing towards it and disliking the acquisition of it by others, which is the first degree of envy. As for envy, it is wishing for the removal of a blessing from its owner. Turning away is cutting off relations, and there may remain with turning away some affection, or there may be no affection or hatred at all."

  1. The call to accept others and overlook faults, for if one dislikes a trait, he should be pleased with another.

From Abu Huraira, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: «A believer should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her traits, he should be pleased with another.» .

And in another narration: «Do not hate her completely, which leads you to separation, but forgive her faults for her good qualities, and overlook what you dislike for what you love.»

  1.  The call to reject all forms of partisanship, whether in word, action, or doctrine.
